Lost innocence

Last night I attended a screening of "The Kids of St. Michael's," a film by U of L student (and fellow Rotaractor) Desmond Kamara. It was intensely moving, sad, and brought up some scary issues. The film was a chronicle of Dez's attempt to locate some of the children he had worked with at St. Michael's, which was a safe-haven for former child soldiers in Sierra Leone. He was looking to see what had become of these children, who had been forced under the influence of drugs and threat of violence…See More

Biofuel

Although I understand the need to find an alternative to using fossil fuels as our main source of energy - I have always been adamant that biofuels are not the way to go.Check out this quick 2 minute video from Al-Jazeera English :http://english.aljazeera.net/news/europe/2010/03/2010315113843716570.htmlIt highlights very well why I don't like biofuels - why on earth should we demand that farmers convert…See More

Haiti : Then & Now

I realize that there have already been numerous posts regarding the earthquake in Haiti and international involvement. But as our "Haiti: Then & Now" event last night proved, this isn't an issue that should be swept away after a few weeks, something that frequently happens after natural disasters, especially in countries where the majority of the victims are desperately poor.As an executive of the U of L Rotaract Club (a humanitarian service organization, affiliated with Rotary…See More

Guantanamo's Deadline

In his first act as president Obama promised to close Guantanamo Bay by January 22, 2010. Since that's tomorrow and there are still detainees in Gtmo, that's obviously a broken promise. Here's a link to the Passionate Eye doc on what's happening there and why it still isn't closed. As it stands, Guantanamo Bay is still holding prisoners that may or may not present a "threat to national security" and is still being used as a way to avoid adhering American and international laws regarding the…See More
