Last week’s presentation by Kristina brought about a very interesting conversation regarding the ethical implications that are embedded in the production and use of biofuels. The discussion brought some aspects of this "green initiative" to my attention, and I became very interested in the subject. I was raised in what one might call an environmentally conscious home. We recycled, had a compost outback, and tried to conserve energy. I still continue to do these things in my day to day life, but I find myself jumping on any "green" bandwagon without reviewing or researching the issue first. I have attached a link to a very interesting article on the downside to biofuels. Environmental issues are something that have always concerned me, but I have a hard time choosing a side. I fully understand that our earth is in danger due to harmful resources such as fossil fuels and oil, but I was also raised in a coal mining community and have a lot of friends and family member who work in the oil sands. It's very easy to critique these industries, but when you know that people that are directly involved in them, it's a lot harder. I think this is why I am so interested in the issues surrounding biofuels. We have reached a point with oil and fossil fuels that finds it hard to establish a solution to the problems that these industries have created, and I don't want to see that same situation to arise for the next generation surrounding biofuels. If we continue to pursue "solutions" that breed further problems, nothing will ever really change. A little idealistic, I know, but we have to start somewhere.
